The Origin Story

Born from a Week of Prayer

In December 1993, Dr. Japhe Roberne Saint Louis returned to New York from a Week of Prayer in Haiti. What he had witnessed at his beloved alma mater, the Adventist University of Haiti (UNAH), moved him deeply: a school rich in mission but struggling in resources, its students and faculty in need of support that only a united alumni community could provide.

He could not stand still. He picked up the phone, called fellow alumni, and invited them to gather at La Detente restaurant in New York City. Around that table, with faith and purpose, they gave birth to CALUNAH: the Alumni Association of the Adventist University of Haiti.

From its earliest days, CALUNAH was more than an alumni network. It was a covenant, a promise made by those who had received much to give generously to those who came after them. Dr. Saint Louis served as its first Executive President and would remain its Chairman of the Board until his final days in 2026.

"Those who have received much have a responsibility to give back. Education transforms lives. Let us invest in those who come after us." Dr. Japhe Roberne Saint Louis • Founder, CALUNAH
